Diving into the wonders of AI

Artificial Intelligence plays a big role in everyday aspects of life; from social media to web searching. It enhances the precision and effectiveness of human efforts. My name is Zoe Petroianu, a sophomore high school student at the American Community School of Abu Dhabi. I am on the Sustainability Committee and my school’s environmental club. This allows me to advocate for environmental protection which is an important issue to me. Outside of school I regularly play tennis and scuba-dive on the weekends.

This summer I had the amazing opportunity of participating in the Inspirit AI summer program which teaches students about coding in Python and ways to apply AI systems to everyday problems. During my time in the camp, I worked on a Disaster Relief Classification project with a group led by Aditya Chander, a PhD student at Yale. We analyzed tweets using a Bag-of-Words model and then determined how well it worked using precision and recall. It was an insightful experience and I met many experts in the field. Therefore, I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in AI and computer science.

In regards to AI, I am interested in image recognition and neural networks. In my three-part blog exploring artificial intelligence, I will focus on the workings of self-driving cars; their history and present development, the technology behind it, and the ethical concerns that many have. I would encourage everyone to read my blog because I believe it will be interesting and educational.
